Flooding Emergency Notice
As Town of Vienna Supervisor, I want to keep residents and the general public as updated as possible in response to the current flooding event impacting our waterfront and adjacent property owners and infrastructure.
Since this is an ever changing situation, I must urge everyone to monitor their text information that Vienna will continue to send out. If you are not signed up for this service, please do so immediately at viennany.gov. I have directed specific notifications be utilized.
Lakeshore Drive is currently closed in both directions from North Bay end through McClanathan Ave. For safety of residents and yourself, please do not attempt to traverse closed roadways. Lakeshore Dr has multiple spots where the road has washed out, and the closure is 100% necessary.
I have been working closely with highway superintendent Conover, and we remain in close communications. I have also been in contact with Oneida County Emergency Management, and at my request, they are delivering a supply of sandbags to our highway garage, and a supply of sand is being picked up as this message is being typed, to ensure that bags can be filled and distributed as quickly as possible.
I want residents to know that Vienna is doing all that we can, but the management of the Oneida Lake water levels is at the discretion of entities outside of our jurisdiction. I have sent a letter to NYS Canal Corp to advance our concerns as a town, and the impacts we faced with this flooding, and am requesting a meeting to better understand their decision making process and to ensure our Town is taken into consideration, the real impacts fully articulated, and to request better information sharing in advance of future events.
We expect to have sandbags delivered by 1pm, and impacted residents are asked to go to the highway garage, where our available employees will help fill bags. With the expected warm up and dry forecast over the next few days, we must all pray that the winds stay calm, and remain vigilant to watch over our neighbors.
I also want to thank our highway department for their efforts, and also extend my fullest gratitude to the men and women of our town fire departments. They are doing what they can to ensure safety first, but as always remain ready to help as we come out of this bad situation.
Jason Spellicy, Town Supervisor,
Town of Vienna, NY
